Burkina Faso continues to face the most severe humanitarian crisis in its recent history. In 2026, around 4.47 million people are in need of assistance and protection. Insecurity, displacement, difficulties in providing humanitarian access, food insecurity and climate-related shocks are depriving entire communities of essential services and causing lasting damage to their living conditions.

Whilst some returns have contributed to a decrease in the number of recorded displacements, this does not mean that vulnerabilities have disappeared. Many families are returning to areas where schools, health centres, water points and economic activities remain inadequately functional. Internally displaced persons, returnees and host communities remain vulnerable to malnutrition, poverty and further forced displacement.

The protection of these populations must go hand in hand with the safe restoration of services and livelihoods. Sustainable return requires access to water, healthcare, education, land and genuine economic opportunities. By linking relief, territorial rehabilitation and community resilience, the response can limit repeated displacement and safeguard development prospects in the most affected areas.
