Nigeria is facing several simultaneous crises in the north-east, north-west and central states. Armed violence, communal clashes, displacement, flooding and epidemics are jeopardising access to essential services. In 2026, around 8.4 million people, including five million children, are in need of humanitarian assistance.

More than 3.7 million people have been displaced, a large proportion of whom are women and children. The destruction of livelihoods, insecurity on the roads and difficulties in accessing farmland are exacerbating hunger and malnutrition. Epidemics, particularly cholera, are placing additional strain on already fragile health systems, whilst the disruption to schooling leaves children more vulnerable to violence and exploitation.

The emergency requires food, nutritional, health and protection assistance, as well as the strengthening of local capacities. The restoration of social services, the safeguarding of agricultural activities, the prevention of epidemics and the reduction of climate-related risks must accompany relief efforts. This integrated approach is essential to protect populations whilst preserving social cohesion and the development prospects of the affected areas.
